Tank and Silo Sandblasting in Michigan

Interior and exterior surface prep for industrial tanks, storage silos, and process vessels.

Tank and silo blasting — inside and out

Tanks and silos require blasting inside and outside to different specifications depending on their service. Interior surfaces in contact with stored product — food, chemicals, water, petroleum — typically require the highest cleanliness standard (SSPC SP-5, white metal) and specific coating systems designed for immersion service. Exterior surfaces that face weather and general industrial exposure may require SP-10 or SP-6 depending on the coating system.

Blasting Jack has direct experience with food-grade silo cleaning, wastewater tank surface prep, industrial storage tank maintenance, and in-ground process vessel blasting. We've worked on tanks ranging from small quench tanks to large silos at food processing facilities.

Through our sister brand Endurance Painting, we can coordinate blasting and lining application on the same project — critical when interior tank lining requires specific timing between blast and coat.

Tank and vessel types

  • Above-ground storage tanks (ASTs)
  • Food-grade storage silos and hoppers
  • Wastewater and water treatment tanks
  • Industrial process vessels
  • In-ground quench tanks and dip tanks
  • Chemical storage tanks
  • Fuel storage tanks (exterior surface prep)
  • Grain silos and agricultural storage

Interior tank blasting

Interior tank blasting is specialized work. Containment of blast debris inside the tank is essential — spent media and removed material must be collected and removed before lining application. Ventilation and air monitoring are required depending on what the tank previously held.

Interior surfaces for lining application typically require SSPC SP-5 (white metal) — all rust, scale, and coating must be removed from 100% of the surface. Any residual contamination under a tank lining creates a failure point.

We work with tank owners and lining contractors to sequence interior blasting and lining application to minimize flash rust development and keep the project on schedule.

Interior tank prep requirements

  • SSPC SP-5 (white metal) typically required for immersion service lining
  • Full containment and collection of blast debris inside tank
  • Ventilation and air quality monitoring
  • Coordination with lining applicator on timing from blast to coat
  • Surface profile confirmation (Testex tape readings)
  • Clean, dry surface before lining application

Frequently Asked Questions

What SSPC standard is required for tank interior lining?

Most industrial tank lining systems require SSPC SP-5 (white metal blast) — 100% of the surface free from all rust, scale, coatings, and contaminants. Some systems accept SP-10 (near-white). Always confirm with the lining manufacturer's product data sheet before blast work begins.

How do you contain blast debris inside a tank?

We vacuum or shovel spent media and removed material out of the tank before the lining crew arrives. Access requirements — manway size, personnel entry, air supply — are evaluated during the site visit. Media recovery is part of every interior tank blast scope.

How quickly does interior lining need to be applied after blasting?

As quickly as possible — typically within hours in warm, humid conditions. Flash rust on bare steel interior surfaces begins immediately after blasting. The lining applicator should be staged and ready to coat the same day as blast completion in most cases.

Can you blast food-grade silos without contaminating the interior?

Yes. We use appropriate media (garnet or other food-safe abrasives), remove all spent media before handoff, and can clean the interior to the standard required before food-grade lining application. We've completed food-grade silo cleaning projects in Michigan.

Do you handle both interior and exterior on the same project?

Yes. We typically schedule interior blasting first (it has more timing-critical constraints for lining application), then exterior. The scope and sequencing depend on the specific tank and project requirements.
