The Problem with Abrasive Blasting in Food Environments
Abrasive blasting — even vacuum-shrouded or contained — introduces foreign material into the environment. Spent steel grit, garnet, or glass bead media disperses into the air and settles on every horizontal surface in the work area. In a food processing plant, that means:
- Spent media in hard-to-clean areas — floor drains, equipment bases, behind machinery, in overhead structural steel joints
- Silica dust in the air — a health hazard to workers and a contamination risk to nearby production
- Media embedded in concrete floors — a potential source of foreign material contamination if any migrates into the production zone
- Production shutdown radius — a much larger area than the work zone itself must be cleared and cleaned before production can resume
Water blasting eliminates the foreign media problem entirely. The only things introduced to the environment are water and whatever was already on the surface being removed.

Concrete and Epoxy Floors
Food processing facility floors take constant abuse: fork truck traffic, thermal cycling from washdown water versus hot ovens, chemical exposure from cleaning agents, and impact damage. Epoxy and urethane floor coatings that fail in food plants need to come off completely before recoating — any remaining disbonded coating under a new layer will cause the new coat to fail in the same spot.
UHP water blasting removes failed floor coatings and prepares the concrete substrate for recoating without:
- Introducing abrasive grit into floor drains
- Generating silica dust from grinding
- Leaving chemical residue from solvent strippers
The floor is left with an open, porous concrete surface — the profile needed for epoxy adhesion — and all removed material drains to the existing floor drain system.
Structural Steel and Wall Panels
Processing areas, cooler rooms, and product storage areas often have structural steel that accumulates corrosion from the wet, temperature-fluctuating environment. Wall panels and support columns in processing areas need to be coated with FDA-acceptable coatings appropriate for food contact or splash zones.
Water blasting removes corrosion and failed coatings from structural steel and wall panels without generating dust that would require full facility evacuation. With the right containment around the work zone, water blasting can proceed with adjacent non-production areas operational.
Drains, Trenches, and Secondary Containment
Floor drains and trench drains in food plants accumulate scale, biological growth, and corrosion on concrete and metal surfaces. Coating these areas requires thorough surface prep. Water blasting removes accumulation from drain walls, floor trench surfaces, and secondary containment areas efficiently — and the removed material drains naturally through the existing drain system.
Overhead Steel and Roof Structure
Overhead structural steel in food processing areas develops rust that can flake and contaminate product below. Recoating overhead steel in an active facility requires a method that doesn’t generate falling grit. Water blasting minimizes falling debris compared to abrasive blasting — water and removed rust fall, but no abrasive media.
FDA and USDA Considerations
FDA and USDA facility inspections evaluate whether maintenance practices could introduce contamination. Using abrasive blasting in or near food processing areas requires demonstrating that all abrasive media has been removed from the facility before production resumes — a time-consuming verification step that delays restart.
Water blasting supports a faster return to production because:
- There is no abrasive media to locate and recover
- Floors and surfaces can be inspected and cleaned using the same washdown procedures used for normal sanitation
- No foreign particulate was introduced that isn’t already part of the facility’s normal cleaning process
This doesn’t eliminate the need for proper facility cleaning before production restart — but it removes the most difficult-to-control contamination source from the maintenance process.
HACCP Plan Integration
Most food manufacturing facilities operate under a HACCP plan that includes maintenance activities as a potential hazard source. Introducing abrasive blasting into a HACCP-controlled environment requires a hazard assessment and control measures for abrasive contamination. Water blasting simplifies this assessment significantly because the media is water — not a foreign particulate with a contamination pathway.
