Dry Ice Blasting for Heavy Equipment and Fleet Maintenance

| Blasting Jack Team

Heavy equipment fleets accumulate grease, hydraulic fluid residue, carbon buildup, and road grime in places that are slow and messy to clean by hand — engine compartments, undercarriages, hydraulic cylinders, and structural frames on excavators, cranes, loaders, and trailers. The usual options are steam cleaning, which introduces water into components that don’t need it, or chemical degreasers, which generate runoff that has to be contained and disposed of properly. Dry ice blasting cleans the same buildup without either problem, which is why fleet and equipment rental operations increasingly bring it in as part of a maintenance and turnaround program.

What Makes Dry Ice Blasting a Fit for Fleet Equipment

CO₂ pellets blasted at high velocity dislodge grease and carbon buildup on impact and sublimate immediately, leaving no secondary waste stream to collect. For equipment that’s being cleaned before a maintenance inspection, a sale, or a return from a rental customer, that means less cleanup time on the back end and no wastewater containment and disposal to manage — a real cost difference over a fleet’s lifetime compared to steam or pressure washing programs that require runoff collection.

Because the process is non-abrasive, it also won’t damage seals, gaskets, wiring, or painted surfaces the way pressure washing at high PSI or aggressive degreasing chemicals can over repeated cleanings.

Where It’s Used on Heavy Equipment

Engine compartments and hydraulic systems. Grease and oil buildup around hydraulic cylinders, pumps, and engine components cleans off without introducing water into electrical connectors or hydraulic fittings — a common source of corrosion when steam cleaning is used repeatedly on the same equipment.

Undercarriages and structural frames. Compacted mud, road salt residue, and grease on undercarriages and frame rails can be cleaned without disassembly, which matters when the goal is a fast turnaround between rental cycles or before a maintenance inspection.

Rental fleet turnaround. Equipment coming back from a rental customer often needs a full clean before it goes back out or goes up for resale. Dry ice blasting gets equipment presentation-ready without the drying time water-based cleaning requires, and without leaving a chemical residue that shows up as a film on inspection.

Trailers and steel hauling equipment. Grease, carbon, and adhesive residue from tie-down points, decking, and structural steel on flatbeds and specialty trailers cleans up in place — complementing mobile blasting and repainting work when a trailer needs both cleaning and a full surface prep and coating job.

Pre-sale and pre-inspection detailing. Equipment being sold or inspected benefits from a clean that doesn’t leave chemical odor or residue behind, and that can be done on-site rather than trucking equipment to a wash facility.

Where Mobile Service Matters

Fleet and rental equipment is often too large, too numerous, or too logistically difficult to move to a fixed cleaning facility. A mobile dry ice blasting crew that comes to the yard, the job site, or the rental return lot removes that constraint — equipment gets cleaned where it sits, on the fleet manager’s schedule rather than around a wash bay’s availability.

What It Doesn’t Replace

Dry ice blasting cleans off grease, carbon, and surface buildup — it doesn’t remove structural rust or corrosion, and it won’t create the anchor profile needed before a repaint. For equipment that needs both a deep clean and full surface preparation for a new coating system, abrasive blasting is still the right tool for the coating-prep phase; dry ice blasting is often the right tool for everything upstream of that.
