Dry Ice Blasting for Food & Beverage Processing Facilities in Michigan

| Blasting Jack Team

Food and beverage plants run on a cleaning schedule that most industries never have to think about. Every changeover, every allergen switch, every scheduled sanitation window comes with a hard requirement: the equipment has to come clean, fast, and without leaving anything behind that could contaminate the next batch. Water introduces moisture and microbial risk. Chemical degreasers require rinse and neutralization steps. Wire brushing and scraping are slow and inconsistent. Dry ice blasting solves the problem these other methods create — it cleans aggressively and leaves nothing behind but the contaminant itself.

Why Dry Ice Blasting Fits Food-Grade Environments

Dry ice blasting propels solid CO₂ pellets at a surface using compressed air. The pellets dislodge residue on impact and sublimate immediately — converting from solid straight to gas — so there’s no secondary media to collect, no water to manage, and no chemical residue that needs to be rinsed, tested, or neutralized before production resumes. CO₂ itself is food-safe and widely used in food and beverage processing already, which is part of why regulators and QA teams are comfortable with it as a cleaning method.

For a facility operating under FDA, USDA, or SQF requirements, that’s not a minor convenience — it removes an entire category of contamination risk from the cleaning process itself.

Where It’s Used in Food and Beverage Plants

Conveyor systems and packaging lines. Grease, sugar residue, and product buildup accumulate on conveyor belts, rollers, and packaging equipment. Dry ice blasting clears this buildup without disassembling the line or introducing moisture that promotes bacterial growth in hard-to-dry corners.

Allergen changeovers. Switching a production line between allergen and non-allergen products requires cleaning validated as thorough enough to prevent cross-contact. Dry ice blasting reaches into gaskets, seams, and equipment crevices that water and wipe-downs miss, without adding the moisture that can trap residue instead of removing it.

Baking and mixing equipment. Baked-on carbon and burnt sugar residue on ovens, mixers, and proofing equipment responds well to the thermal shock dry ice creates on impact — the extreme cold makes baked-on residue brittle and easier to fracture free than scraping alone.

Cold storage and refrigeration equipment. Mold, ice buildup residue, and organic film on cold storage walls, racking, and refrigeration coils can be cleaned without introducing water that will refreeze or promote further mold growth in a cold, humid environment.

Dairy and beverage processing equipment. Tanks, valves, and fill lines with dried product residue clean up quickly with dry ice blasting, which won’t leave grit or chemical film in threaded fittings or gaskets the way abrasive or chemical methods can.

What This Means for Downtime

Because dry ice blasting often doesn’t require full disassembly and produces no secondary waste stream to collect, scheduled cleaning windows can be shorter than with water-based or chemical sanitation methods. For a plant running multiple shifts, cutting even an hour off a changeover cleaning window has a real production impact over a year.

What It’s Not a Substitute For

Dry ice blasting removes surface contamination — it’s not a replacement for a validated CIP (clean-in-place) system for interior tank and pipe sanitation, and it doesn’t sanitize in the microbiological sense on its own. It’s a mechanical cleaning method that’s typically used alongside a facility’s existing sanitation program, not instead of it, particularly for direct food-contact surfaces that require a documented sanitation step.
